When organizing a large reunion—any reunion, not just high school—you need to plan. Not doing this is how too many reunions fail to garner the necessary support and attendance. Plan well and expect the best. Plan for success.
What’s a reunion plan?
Simply put, it is a stated mission and goal, and calendar. It will include current resources, needed resources, a budget, and a list of key team members.
Typically, reunion planning begins 12-18 months ahead. This allows the team to work to discover people, word-of-mouth buzz to get around, and to reserve a good venue. If you’ve got a good team, nothing is rushed. Good, careful decisions will follow.
Often, interested people meet at homecoming in early fall and talk ideas, and look toward the following homecoming for their event.
Why homecoming? The school will be ready to show off, people will be in town, and the weather is probably neither too hot or too cold. (Chicago-area people can ignore that. You just never know what late September/early October weather will bring!)
Avoid it being football-centric, though, as this will alienate some members of your class year. Meet informally at the game, with an alternative picnic, followed (or preceded) by a nicer dinner.
Keep in mind scheduling work and flight plans will be tight. A Friday night reunion event will be tricky for out-of-towners.
Good luck as you imagine what a great reunion you’ll have. You can do it.
